I can't answer your question yet Tony, not until I get some scientific data com'piled' (I snuck a pun in on ya, ha). How's the saying go? "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em".

Before I start with a new grit I always do the following: Wipe guitar down with a clean wet paper towel, using a cup of plain clean water, dry with a clean paper towel, repeat. Next I blast the block and rubber pad with the garden hose, and I change out my cup of soapy water and start with fresh stuff, don't want cross-grit contamination.

I'm not stingy with the water, I wipe dry after sanding for a minute or two and inspect under a bright light, repeat as many times as needed to get a consistent scratch pattern.

The block works well on the sides except the waist area, for this I use a piece of 2" PVC pipe with my rubber pad and sand paper wrapped around it.

Here's what it looks like when the sanding is complete with 1000 grit, now it's off to the next grit.

Actually with all of my experience in testing procedures, especially as they pertain to carpet use, I have found that the type of carpet has absolutely no effect on the resulting tone or playability of the instrument, however....my thorough testing has lead me to believe that the very best newspaper to use is the New York Times.....nothing else compares, or even comes close to what it can do for or to your guitar.....especially if you place the sports section facing out.

But the Times always makes my guitar lean really really far to the left; it's even warped out on the edges..

Darren, please don't tell me that this isn't 2005, I mean, did I really lose 6 years? My, how time flies! New York Times does produce a better sound, however, a bit too rich for my blood, I'm more of a National Enquirer, Star kinda guy, but you have to be careful, it will tend to make the guitar sound fake!
