When tucking the bridge plate and tone bars into the X-braces, like in vintage Martins, how far into the braces are they recessed and what is the best way to cut the recess?

Thanks,
Scott

they went through at about 1/16 in thick. Use what works best , You can also use a miter notch. The maple plate often has a wider slot by about 1/8 in. It looks like it was by design to be able to slide the plate in or out. I have seen 5 examples all had that.

Thanks John. What's the typical way this notch is made? Chisel?

Do the side tone bars get tucked into the X brace as well or is it just the main tone bars and bridge plate?

they all did get notched the bridge plate only went 1/2 way through and had about 1/8 in extra on the lower side. This allows removal as a plate is designed to be sacrificial.

Thanks John. I wasn't sure if the small tone bars that are above the lower legs of the X-brace got tucked into the X-brace as well. Tuck everything (into the X-brace)!
