Post by Chardo »

Hello All.
Trying to pick a first kit.
decisions so far: 000, 14 fret.
still to be decided : tone woods and which kit. KMG success Kit or a Blues Creek kit.
Any insight would be appreciated .

I have used John's materials ever since I got into building three years ago. I got the kits for the first three builds from John. They are now all scratch builds and I am now on numbers 23, 24 and 25.

John is always there to answer any questions I may have. And yes, I still come across things I need to ask about after building 22 guitars!!!

His YouTube videos are awesome and he if always updating them.

My first build will also be a 000 14 fret and I plan on buying my kit from John at Blues Creek Guitars.

What woods are you going to use and why?

It'll be a Martin kit with spruce top and mahogany back and sides. The other Martin kit option is with rosewood back and sides and is more expensive. I'd rather butcher the cheaper kit.

Ed, all first timers should adopt your attitude about going less expensive on the first kit.
No two ways about it....mistakes will be made.
Better to make them on a $20 top than a $100 top. Same goes for less expensive back and side wood.

If you aren't buying a custom kit from John/Blues Creek, you're barking up the wrong tree.
Stop to think....will ANY other kit supplier be available for support by phone or Skype during
working hours, and often after hours? Answer to that is a resounding NO.
The more answers you get to a question from different folks, the more you add to your own confusion.
You don't want to get caught up in the 'paralysis by over analysis' swamp.

We do take full building support serious here. I am available weekend and evenings, we don't want you to think we sell you a kit and forget about you. think about this , your first kit is just that and you will get better as you go , so keep it simple on the first one.
Set up your jigs and as you gain experience , you will see that waiting for the higher end stuff may be your best bet. I am here to help so feel free to call me first. I am here to help 100%
