tortoishell binding and glueing
I have some of the above. Can anyone advise on the sort of gule to fix it with. I have tested three types and they all seem to 'melt' the binding slightly, much like plasic model kits and glue. Is this ok? Or can anyone reccomend something else bearing in mind that I am in the uk.
Thanks

IMO it's good that the glue dissolves the plastic slightly, as it means you are getting an excellent bond to the surface. The only caveat is of course to be careful not to get glue on the outside where it would be visible.
I've used DUCO cement for attaching ivoroid binding.

I use duco cement or weld on.
Don't worry too much about making a mess , between the scraping and sanding it will come out nice. The lacquer is also acetone based and will melt into the binding and hide all scratches.

Wow. Speedy response or what! Thanks guys, that is really helpful. Now, should I fit the purfling and binding as two seperate operations or try to do them together in one go?.
Thanks again

BTW I have found the perfect tool for heat bending the purfling if you don't have a bending iron - a set of GHD hair straightners, but don't tell my daughter!

Glue them up together. Here is another glue to try. It is much less messy and binds very well. I have found my scraping and sanding to get every thing looking good much easier since I switched to it from Duco and weld-on.stevegullick wrote:Wow. Speedy response or what!
