Fretboard Fitting Question. Pics Attached

Post by pryde »

I am at the point of dry fitting my fretboard onto the neck and body to see how things are all lining up.

The stew mac instructions say to draw the nut line right at the break angle of the headstock (see photo) and then glue the fretboard right at this line. The problem is that if I bring it up to the nut line, the 12th fret doesn't line up right to the body (see other photo). Looking at other's build pictures and the blueprint it looks like the 12th fret should be directly lined up with the body/binding line.

So then how/where should the fretboard be glued? Do I move it down (away from the nut line) to line the 12th fret up to the body, or do I glue it right on the nut line? Thanks for the help

Is the neck attached yet?

Yes the neck is bolted on snug right now for the test fit. it lines up quite well overall so I am happy about that

I would move it down so the fret lines up to the body

Are you sure you don't have a 14 fret neck length? A picture showing the 12th fret over the body AND the nut end location at the same time would help.

Yes it is not a 14 fret neck, the measurement is only off about 3/16ths of an inch. I guess I will move the fretboard down away from the nut line abit to get the 12th fret to line up with the body.

I gotta say so far I have not been impressed with the whole stew-mac kit experience. Should have ordered from John :)

I think you have a short scale fretboard and a long scale neck.

I think he has slot head and while he is setting up the fretboard to the headstock angle , nut goes on the fret board plane , see if that work.
If not call the kit supplier you may have mismatched neck

Is this a stew mac kit ?
The neck appears to be a martin neck so the stew mac instructions won't work. Place the 12th fret on the body and send pics of the nut area.

Yes this is a stew mac 000 kit with bolt-on neck. When I line the 12th fret up to the body (with the neck bolted on snug) the fret board is doesn't reach the nut line (as shown in picture one) by 3/16".

Note, the fretboard in picture one is not lined up at the 12th fret. it is slid away so I could take a picture of the penciled nut line. this might be causing confusion
