Hey, just a quick question. I'm using a satin finish on my guitar, I'm following the instructions for finishing in the stewmac instruction book. but it seems to be for a polished finish anything i should be doing different? on the sanding or such?

I think if the finish is labeled satin you can stop at a lower grit micromesh, or not polish it up as high. No reason too, really, just get it level and an even level of reflection.

What type of material are you applying? A satin finish actually has a flattening paste added to make it refract light differently and lower the sheen. Inter-coat abradement should be the same but the finish would not typically be level sanded and buffed or polished at the end. This differs from making a satin finish from a gloss product where the final sheen is attained by dulling the surface after polishing. Usually done with pumice or steel-wool.

The clear satin sealer is what I am using.

SM#3882 clear satin finish is a true satin with flattening paste added to it. So apply thin even coats. Sand lightly between coats to keep the surface fairly level. 320 or 400 grit works well at this stage. build up your finish to slightly thicker than what you would want it to be finished at.Llet it set and cure out for a while. Depending on temp, humidity and air movement this could be a couple of weeks. Level sand the surface as if you were going to buff it out with the exception that you really don't need to go beyond about 600 grit. Then spray on the final coat. This will be what you see when it is finished so get it on as level and even as you can. let it cure and it's done.
