String spacing on the nut

I have made a nut for an older guitar that has binding on the neck.

Do you measure for the E and e string placement from the edge of the binding or the actual edge of the wood in the fret board?

from the edge of the binding as that is part of the neck.. you want to be about .100 from the edge
