Back split about 5 inches after putting braces on

Post by Sunflash »

So I just read chimpotle's topic and I am having almost the same problem, but I just put my center braces on my rosewood back and I think I had a little to much pressure and I got a split on the bottom about 5 inches long... Idk if there is anything I can do other then buying a new back and braces. I was wondering about trying to glue it with wax paper on ether side and then put a inlay along the back?

No need for a new back, you can fix it.

If your back reinforcment strip is holding the seam apart you may need to remove it (use heat and the glue will likely soften around 140F). After the strip is removed, remove the old glue with scraper or sandpaper. Now see if the split closes all the way. If you had a flat joint it should close up but if you are running low humidity it's possible you might need to rehumidfy the back before it closes up. If you can't get the gap to close, use heat to take the back apart, re-joint the edge, and then re-glue. If the gap does close, then use thin CA glue to to glue the split. It will seep down into the crack and glue with no issues. If you are using light colored wood for the back let us know what kind of wood and you might need to use a different glue option so you don't have a dark spot on the repair.
