Post by grey65 »

Hello,i have a simple question,i took the finish off my strat neck and shaped it it more to my liking..Im going to to just use some wipe on poly satin for it and my question...What is the last grit do you recommend before i use the the poly?Because i find the 1200 leaves ebony fingerboard dust in my maple neck..

going too fine can cause adhesion problems. Most finishes are good to 220 grit Rub on you may try finer . 400 would be good enough the smoother the finish the more sticky the neck may feel when your hands sweat

I've done a lot of necks, and I usually go to 320. BTW, You might consider using the gloss poly, it really doesn't start getting glossy until about the 5th coat. If it gets too glossy, you can always steel wool it back to your liking. I've started using that Minwax Wipe-on Poly (gloss, in the silver can) on all my necks with rosewood fretboards. Still spraying Nitro on the maple ones. The wipe-on has virtually no odor...so I can even use it in the house during the colder months.

If you are going to put a hard finish on, you definitely don't want to sand it do the point that there is a sheen. Just get it nice and smooth, make sure all of your sanding scratches are gone, and let the finish do the rest.
