Truss Rod

Post by hummingbird »

I bought 3 necks from hanalei-moon. They come with a truss rod. There is blue tape over the truss rod as you can see in the photo. Stupid question but am I supposed to remove the tape and glue the truss rod in or just glue the fretboard on top as is. Second option doesn't sound right to me.
Can someone please help explain to me how I should prepare the neck / truss rod / fingerboard in terms of assembly.

I use them for all my necks. Pull the tape . when you are ready to set the fretboard , just run a bead of glue into the slot. DO NOT PULL THE JACKET OFF THE TRUSS ROD . lay the rod in the glue apply glue for the board and clamp. The glue is just a filler to keep things from rattling and buzzing. Running dog is correct no glue in tape .
I like the necks , they are nice and he can do so many styles.
His necks also come with the rod and block. High quality for a fair price

Thanks Rick and John. Thats what I thought. Hanalei-Moon did a great job on these necks. They made exactly what I asked for and delivered when promised.

I just received a neck from him as well. The blue tape is just to hold the truss rod in place so it doesn't fall out during shipping.

John, what kind of glue do you use in the truss rod slot, Titebond?

The 2-Way Martin truss rod that came with my neck has a small hole/tare in the vinyl cover. That won't hurt anything will it?

Only thing I don't like about the neck I received is the neck block is only 1 1/8" thick and I expected at least 1 5/16".

He will get you a new block for sure . the hole won't hurt anything. I actually had a customer take it out of the wrapper and it still worked.
If you are doing a pre war guitar you will want a thicker block 1 9/16 and post war 1 3/8

This is a knock-off of a Norman Blake on a 00 Body.......so it's definitely not pre-war........and not really post-war either <smile>. He said he would make me another neck block if I want it.

I asked a question about this on OLF and John Arnold commented that he didn't think the top/back has enough stiffness for the depth of the neck block to play a significant role in preventing neck block rotation. He thought an extra wedge shaped piece of spruce (similar to the sounboard thickness) between the neck block and UTB was a good preventative for neck block rotation.

I'm using a 1/4"X1/4" spruce brace angled through this area to help prevent splits along the soundboard. I'll have to ponder on the wedge Arnold describes.

I know john will get you another block that would be the best way to go.

My truss rod install is similar to most others.

I put three dabs of silicone in the channel, under the area where the sleeve covers the rod for rattle prevention. Then insert the rod. I put a piece of masking tape over the rod area when I apply the glue and then remove it before I join the fretboard. This is just a little insurance to keep the adhesive from getting into the channel and locking up the rod. Probably only necessary with Epoxy, but I use it regardless of glue choice.
