Stewmac Kit. Should I accept this?

This is a new Stewmac Roswood D kit. I guess I would call this "snipe" but I'm not sure that's technically what it is. It's from the planer I assume. The back of this guitar measures .114" with the deepest part of the gash approximately .105". I'm new to building so I'm not sure If I will be sanding it thinner later anyway.

Should I send this back? You'll see this through the soundhole if i leave it.

These are phone pics taken with no flash, so I apologize for the quality.

give them a call I am sure they will replace that for you. Things happen and no you don't really want to use that if you can help it

I would definitely not accept that. And Stewmac has the best customer service on the planet. I'm sure they will replace it expeditiously.

Thanks for the help! I wasn't sure what was best, and whether i would later be sanding it to thickness.

They asked no questions other than my address...and are sending a new B/S set asap.

Thanks guys. I called them and they are sending a new back/sides set ASAP. Is .114" optimal thickness for a Rosewood dread? Maybe it never got sanded. I think this was put together by a holiday crew, so hopefully the next one will be better.

Find someone with a thickness sander and you'll probably have and additional B/S set to use or sell. Looks to me it can be sanded out.

Well...I have a thickness sander. I just didn't know what the optimal thickness should be and whether I would have enough left after sanding. It'd have to be thinner than .105". Still shouldn't have to sand out the kit, so I'm glad they are replacing it.

I think .105 for a rosewood back would probably be fine

My plans for the OM (by Antes) reference .09" for top, back, and sides. I think .105 is just fine.

For sure you can use that back on a 000 or 00 sized guitar. I used 0.100" for the back on my last 000. I've never done it, but some folks have successfully rebent sides......so that might work as well and you have a free back/side set!
