Re: Loose kerfed lining
Yeah, this can be caused by the method used to clamp or the location where the clamp (clothes pin) contacts the lining. The clamp can grab at the top of the lining and sort of rotate it up away from the side if you aren't careful. Some clamps shapes are worse at this than others. Try to make sure the clamp contacts the lining down around the middle of the lining (top to bottom) and this will help hold it flat against the side. Try clamping a piece of lining without glue and see how it lays on the side and how you need to adjust the clamps before re-gluing.
I can relate to feeling rushed after spreading glue while trying to get everything clamped. Try glueing shorter sections where you don't need to feel rushed.
On the gaps, are you describing a gap between the neck/tail blocks where there is no lining? If so, I fill that in so the lining goes all the way to the neck/tail block. If I'm gluing a long section I may end up a bit short and then need to add a short piece of lining, but I still fill that in. Also, I glue the lining to the neck and tail blocks (as well as the sides).

Re: Loose kerfed lining
I was referring to John's video about gluing linings where he said definitively NOT to let the lining go all the way to the tail/neck block. I was asking, "why not?" Still don't quite understand the purpose in leaving it short. I ran my lining tight to the blocks, but since I'm taking it out anyway I can change it.Darryl Young wrote: On the gaps, are you describing a gap between the neck/tail blocks where there is no lining? I would also like to know why to leave it short. Is it to alow for expansion when it gets humid?

Re: Loose kerfed lining
having them tight against a block can create a buzz. Kerfing is only there for glue surface.

That's interesting John. I wasn't aware of that. I guess if you glue lining to neck/tail block like I did there is still a chance of the glue coming loose and then getting a buzz.

Re: Loose kerfed lining
When I was using triangular kerfed linings I used small cauls cut on an angle.Got the idea from Charlie Hoffman or John Greven. Took a bit extra time but worked a treat. I now use reversed lining and easier to glue as things are parallel and no blow outs when cutting notches for braces.

I got some new clamps (these aluminum clamps are awesome. Very strong and affordable. 95 cents on Amazon). I had to completely remove all the linings, but a couple of days of lower humidity gave me a chance to work on it more. This looks MUCH MUCH better this time.

Sweet, looks very nice. That's a million dollar kerfing with all those clamps!

Ha! Yeah...it may be overkill on the clamps, but I wanted to make sure every spot was attached. Taking no chances! :)Kevin Sjostrand wrote:Sweet, looks very nice. That's a million dollar kerfing with all those clamps!
