New kit finish choice

Post by Radmcg »

I have a LP kit from Stew Mac. It was a replacement from a delamination that I had on one of their other kits. I posted a lot about it on here. Situation I have had 3 LP Kits with paper thin Veneer on the body.
First kit I wiped on alcohol based stain (Stew Mac) and had streaks everywhere. Was terrified I would sand through but finally worked. Used Spray lacquer (tinted) it looks great just a real pain.

Second kit was subject of a thread here. Used water based Stain and had veneer delamination. Took me forever to fix and it still has a couple of small problem spots.
I Have spray equipment and spray lacquer fairly well. I am just gun shy of staining the top again. Both times this has caused me the most trouble.
How should I proceed? The kit is flame maple so/so figuring nothing special. I have thought of just doing a wipe on poly or Tru oil finish with it. But not sure I would like that. How can I get color into this thin veneer body? Definitely not going to use water based stain as Stew Mac (recommended against it) and was very nice enough to send me this kit after I screwed the last one up.
I am leaning toward Tru oil but have never done that or even laid my hands on an oil finished guitar.
Any advice appreciated.
