Martin OM kit

Post by BorderLibrarian »

Hi,

I want to attempt my first guitar kit. I really want a rosewood OM, as it's a sound I really like. I was looking buying a Martin kit, but the specs it lists are for a 1 11/16 nut on the fingerboard. It's a richlite fingerboard, that I want to swap out for an Ebony one.
  1. Does anyone with experience of doing a Martin kit know if the neck blank has enough width for me to use a fingerboard with a 1 3/4 nut width?
  2. Does anyone know if the neck is pre-shaped? If so, what profile the neck will come with? Is there enough material to shape it to taste? I want a larger neck shape. The most common Martin Modified Low Oval neck shape is too small for me.
Many thanks

I make guitars all of the time, varying the specs. Talk to John Hall about replacing the 1 11/16" width neck with a 1 3/4".

That's terrible news.

Get your kit from John, he'll take care of you very well.

I am nearing completion of my first build from one of John’s kits. He tailored the kit to my wishes and I couldn’t be happier. We chatted on the phone many times and he has provided continued support all along the way. He’s always happy to help. Price was very competitive, as well. Highly recommended!

Don’t know if you went forward with any of this, but I just saw this and wanted to add another recommendation for Blues Creek. I built my first and (so far) only guitar about 5 years ago and went with them. And I’m so glad I did. With them, you aren’t just buying some premade kit that is waiting in a box to be sent out. John will custom build basically anything you are wanting. And after you purchase, John is happy to help you out along the way. Not just a product with a set of directions, but he is personally invested and wants to see you succeed. Most of his video guided me along the way, but there were multiple times I got stuck or ran into a problem. He would often respond with a phone call in less than a day and talk through the issue. Getting ready for my second build and I won’t even be considering anybody else.
