Setting neck

Post by mdutko »

John - thanks for the excellent videos on setting a dovetail neck. My 000 is coming along nicely and Im working on the neck now. Its a short scale 24.9 so here is what I have done so far, just want to make sure everything is correct. I made a pencil mark on the neck where the 12th fret would be then measured 12.5 from that mark and put a pencil mark on the body for reference. With the neck tapped in and holding a straightedge across the neck I have just shy of 1/8" difference not really 3/16" I guess more in the neighborhood of 5/32" Is this acceptable? Center is perfect so i just need to do a little coping sanding and then drop. All this is pretty much the way it fit together the first time, I consider myself lucky. Thanks everyone for all your great feedback over the last year of this project Im finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel

the rise at that point should be 1/16 in to 1/8 just a little forward tilt in the neck. It wont take much.
you can also check this by placing the fretboard on the neck and use a straight edge. Use the bridge as your gauge and you want to just clear the bridge with the frets on the board you would want to see about 1/16 off the top of the bridge in the center.
