Very nice Darren, that headstock is going to be fine. You have a lovely finish on that neck by the way, it looks so even and smooth.

I wouldn't sand any higher than 220 grit prior to finishing because of risking adhesion failure.
For end grain I do use garnet sand paper though. It seems to bite a bit harder, and not wear out as quickly. May or may have not made a difference for your problem, but food for though.

this is an oil finish -no problems going up into micromesh grits before finish if you really want to. lacquer would be a different story.
