Nut files

Hey so a quick question. Hopefully one of my last, almost done!
So, I'm looking at having to file the nut for my strings... I really don't want to pay for a full set, so wondering if there is anything or a certain file that would work?

You could probably get by w/ a set of Nicholson Needle files. Available at most hardware stores. A thin razor saw (hobby saw) can slot the high E & B strings. Rock it back forth to widen the slot...
Although, a set good set of nut files is worth the investment...!

I got a cheap set of diamond files off ebay. I have done three sets of nuts and saddles with them so far and have not had any issues.

Someone here has posted a set of guidelines as far as nut/string/saddle heights for doing a decent set up. You will also need a cheap set of feeler gauges. I got mine for five bucks at an auto parts place.

Josh Gemmel at info@japarts.ca can help you out. He carries the same files as LMI but at a better price. He can also put a set together containing the file dimensions of your choice. I bought a set from him and am pleased with the files.

For a long time...and still do, I keep a set handy of welders spiral tip files that you can get at the auto parts store. They have a gritty file surface for cleaning out the welding tip of various sized brazing tips. They work great if you are undecided hopefully not to oversize your cut. You can match the tip cleaner to your string sizes as well. They sell cheap and come in various sizes. Hope this helps some.
