Truss Rod too Short?

Post by Logan »

Obviously not set into place yet, but as you can see, the truss rod on this Stewmac kit looks to be a bit short. Is this going to cause any problems or am I good to go? The instructions said to insert a block some measurement beyond the nut, which I did, and with the non-adjustable end of the truss rod butted up against that block, I end up with this.

These are the little stupid details that keep me up at night...

you should be ok just be sure you can get to the nut to adjust the rod.

Hi Logan and John. I too think my truss rod may be too short. I bought it from John, its 14" long. I ordered the one I though was correct. perhaps I should have asked John but it was a long time ago.
I own guitars that have the end of the truss rod in the UTB easily accessible and thats how I want my guitars to be. I dont mind buying a longer truss rod. I would prefer the truss rod to be right inside the hole of the UTB.
Does the truss rod have to be right to the back of the channel or can it be brought forward a bit to fit?
Heres a pic.
Would someone please suggest more possible solutions, thanks.

The older design 1 way rods went up to the UTB but not the new 2 way designs. In both cases the rods will do the job. There is a few designs out the but they do have similarities. They work by being able to push and pull on the rods , thus the 2 way adjustment ability.
I personally prefer non adjustable rods or 1 way. The wrapped rods are a better design , as they do not weld or silver solder a barrel nut to the threaded rod. Thus the are more robust . I have had 2 2way rods fail that had this design and will never use them again. The blue one is the same that Martin uses and I like that design as I tried to break it and couldn't. The barrel nut is not welded but encased so that you tighten it and it pulls on the rod , loosen it and it will push on the rod as the nut is captured .

Thanks for resonding John. So I guess I'll have to have an extra long truss rod wrench to access it. What bothers me is that you cant see the the end and correct alignment of the wrench may be a little challenging or annoying to a potential customer. It looks like the only solution is to have access to the truss rod at the head stock.
