Definitions for dummies

Post by rposgood »

I have asked this question a few different times in various forums but have yet to get a good answer.

What is the difference between the various (major) types of guitars. When I went shopping for a kit, the models were identified by type OM/12, OM/14, Dreadnaught and I had no clue what I was deciding on. I know OM = Orchestra Model but what does that mean? so what is OO = ?? and Dreadnaught = bigger, deeper, ??

Help a dummy out please.

the numbers and letter designate sizes The number on the end 000-18 would be a 000 size 18 style then if you see a 000-14 or 000-12 that would me a 000 size with a 12 or 14 fret neck.
Here is a list of sizes so you can compare them.

---- ----- ----- ----- ------- ------ --------------
1/4 12 6 3/16 2 7/8 12 (early version)
1/4 12 8 15/16 3 9/16 12 1/16 (later version)
1/2 12 10 1/8 3 3/8 15 1/16
