Will there be a problem reusing the fingerboard on another neck?

not if it the proper scale length. As for are knife, that is a not the best tool . If you lift a grain the sharp knife will follow and you can damage a neck not to mention if it slips. My favorite tool are artists pallet knives.

Thanks for all of the tips, everybody. I spent about an hour trying to soften the glue on the neck block with an iron set on high heat. Burnt myself a little, but made no progress on the glue. It's got to be operator trouble one way or another. Maybe one issue was the fact that both the iron and the guitar sides are convex, so I could only really heat a small section of the surface at one time. I'm going to set it aside for a few days and try again with a clear head.

I've found the artist pallet knives too thin for this job and in fact for me they lift the grain quicker than thick bladed knife I show in the picture (actually you can see the pallet knife I use to start the job in the background). The thickness of the knife lifts the board ahead of the blade. I have never split a board yet since I got this knife. Each to his own I guess.

I have some high end that are made of tempered. I had a set off ebay that were glorified tin foil. Go to an art supply place and you can find some nice tools that you will see will do the job. A good flexible putty knife may also work.

OK, I got the neck block removed. Thanks again for all the advice.

I think the key thing I learned was that getting the putty knife started into the glue joint is the hardest part. Once it's in, the glue came apart pretty easily with slow pressure. Concentrating the heat from the iron at the seam where the knife goes in helped the joint to separate just enough to get started. It took about 3 minutes with my clothes iron on high to get to that point. At that point I was able to start the knife and leave it in place while I applied the iron for about two more minutes over the entire glued area.

I also gave it a try with a hair dryer, but mine was just not hot enough (or maybe I was just not patient enough).

My hair dryer is about 20 years old and works more like a heat gun. The newer ones are designed not to get too hot so they cycle the heat on and off. the iron is probably better anyway.
