A friend of mine has a nice old Star brand duplicator that does a great job carving necks. It is a hand me down from a guitar company. His is only the 2 bit model, with one bit spining clockwise and the other bit spinning counter clockwise to accommodate duplicate carving with and against the grain. These carvers have been basically replaced by CNC's, but the old manual ones still make quick work of neck duplicating. The company that made the carver is now out of business. The issue is with finding router cove bits made for counter clockwise cutting. Know of a source? Thanks, Bob

Hope this helps. They're probably pricy, but it sounds like a bit like that would last a very long time. Also, I've found that Woodcraft has their buyer catalogs and are able to special order (you never know). I'll keep looking.

Stupid question: my cnc can feed in a cw (routing cut) or ccw (climb cut). Doesn't that mean that most bits cut in both directions?

Bits can cut in either direction, but larger 2 or 3 flute can easily tearout chunks of wood, as can happen going the wrong direction when cutting binding channels. Your CNC bits are probably pretty small, or are spiral bits, and either of those variables lessens the chance of tear out.

I found that you want to use a round bit on these . You use a stylus that rides the item you want to duplicate. The round bit should be the same as the stylus you use
in this case an up cut or shear cut the down cut on a hand held can cause jumping
