Mat cutter blades for scraping

Post by Stray Feathers »

Lots of people use razor blades for delicate scraping jobs. When I was a picture framer, we went through hundreds of blades in our mat cutters, and I started using them for scraping. You can buy new ones in lots of places, but if you know a picture framer, you may be able to get used ones for free. The tips are not sharp enough for mat cutting, but still extremely sharp. And the middle of the blade is unused. The common thickness is .012", so very stiff, but they can be curved for scraping small spots. I used some recently when levelling bumps of lacquer left by drop filling. I find this near impossible with sandpaper, but using these as scrapers makes it much easier and more precise to get them level. The photo is of a major brand, Fletcher Terry, but there are many, all similar in appearance. Bruce W.
