No, you're not. If I had a 18" wide thickness sander, I'd glue the halves together first. That's the way one ought to do it. But with a 9" wide sander, I sand each half then make sure they're aligned really well when gluing. It's not ideal, but it's do-able.

That's why there can be an advantage to the open ended sanders. Sand each half (with an overlap) when it's glued together. Model names, 10-20, 16-32, 22-44, etc.
