I know there was a recent post about a router, but I was wondering if I could get some feedback about this. I have narrowed down my possibilities to the Bosch Colt and the Rigid 2401. Which do you recommend? I don't want to go the cheaper route because I want something that will do the job right and last a long time. Many people have made a case for one or the other. I know I could get either for about the same price. Discuss...

I liked the ridgid so much I retooled and that is what I am using.
Anyone want to buy a PC 7310 ?

I bought the Bosch Colt a couple of years ago because it seemed to be the one everyone was using for this stuff. I have no complaints. Of course I don't have any comparison so take that for what it's worth.

Ridgid

Only someone who has used all the laminate trimmers/routers can give you an educated reply about which is THE best.
I've used both the Ridgid and the Colt with no complaints about either.
If John declares the Ridgid his choice, that's as good an endorsement as you'll get.

Look at the Colt on Amazon, for example. And in particular look at the accessories - the tilt base and the roller guide.

The tilt base looks like it will help you on the guitar back, where the radial curves make it very difficult to control the depth of the binding rabbet. The roller guide will help keep the bit perpendicular to the side, and allows you to use a narrow, all carbide downspiral bit, which will make a clean cut without the tendency to grab.

With the tilt base, you should also be able to use a 1/4 inch solid carbide spiral bit with a guide bearing to trim the edge overhang of the back and top without having to do much touch-up with sandpaper.

So, if the cost is no object, then i would vote for the Bosch Colt. It is also available as a factory refurb for under $80.

I have a colt and the ridgid is a great tool , it has variable speed and to mount a donut on the base the colt needs to be drilled and tapped to mount it. I do agree it is a good tool and is rated in the same league as the ridgid. The Ridgid is also guaranteed for life.
The tilt base is a nice option and if you decide to upgrade to a binding machine later , they can be mounted on the jig. The ridgid has 2 5mm bolts and is a more secure fit on the machine. In either case they are superior to the HF , Grizzly , Gripe and other low end imports.
Also they are a lot quieter to operate. I think the colt also has the variable speed on it. Both have front access adjustablility also and are easier to make finite adjustments.

Another vote for the Colt. I love mine and it's easy
to use.....
