binding tower info needed

Post by newbybeau »

hello all, this is my first post.. I have been very inertested in all the information I have read here. on my first bild and have closed the box up and learning by many mistakes on this first one. I have been stuck on a good way to route the binding channel and have decided the best way for me to go is to build a binding tower. I like the one that john hall uses very much as well but in my small space storage is at a premium. could some one give me the rough deminsions fo the towers I have seen on this site. height, width and depth. I think I can figure it from there. thanks so much in advance. Beau

ps i haave found that building the tools is almost as fun as the guitar itself

Hello and welcome, here's my 2 cents.

I use the articulating arm version, it folds up and it's easy to pack away.
Plus it was cheap to build. Like you, I do enjoy building the jigs and things

Whichever way you go, you probably want to build a cradle as well.

the arms don't work properly without the carriage.
In your case you can see the angle transfer at the top , this will make the binding appear to lean into the top . The carriage works to keep the sides perpendicular to the table and parallel to the cutters.

the arms use a commercial work slide and are stainless steel
the parallel arms are something I machine.

Scott, I like that setup. Where did you find the rod, the bushings that fit it, and the locking collar that comprise your tower? I'm guessing you could make a version that clamps to the table and is easily unclamped and removed for storage.

It's just a 3/4 steel rod with brass bushings from Ace Hardware.
It slides in to a makeshift bracket in my bench and I take it out when not in use.
When making things like this I just wing it, I always tell myself "it's just a prototype" and I'll make a better one when I get it right.

I have lots of prototypes right now ;)

Well finally found some extra time and built a binding machine. Similar to the one John Hall demonstrates on YouTube. Worked pretty well. Sadly I have not figured out how to post pics of my meger success Still need to figure out how to get rid of the fuzzies with out causing to much change in the channels Also I could make some minor improvement in the machine but I am pretty satisfied. Thank you. I would not have had as much success without the info posted here

figured out how to post a couple of pics cant do it on the i pad had to go to pc
