I have not been happy with any of the double sided tape that I have tried when trying to hold on a template while routing. I was wondering what others used.
Thanks.

John,
I have some 3M tape that is grey, not white. It is "extreme hold" or something like that. Works really well. I've had it a long time so not sure where I bought it, but it would have been either OSH or Home Depot

I'm not sure what it's actually called, but I bought something the guys at Woodcraft call 'Turner's Tape'. I have used it for a few template-ey kinds of things and it seems to have worked, and it seems to come off cleanly in most cases.
The adhesive side feels similar to duct tape.
It might be worth a try.

I don't have the packaging, but I think this is the tape I have.
Not 3M but Scotch. It is not permanent as the package indicates.

This is the stuff I got at woodcraft. It's pricey, but it doesn't take much. The stuff is designed to hold a blank while it's being turned on a lathe...

This is listed as 'turners tape'.
They also have this product
http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/200084 ... Yards.aspx
Which is listed as 'Band Saw / Scrollsaw Tape'. The roll pictured is identical, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the same thing. You might make a trip down there and see what they have.

Thanks for the information. I will look for one of the above described products.

I use doublesided carpet tape.
My previous job included attending trade shows at big convention centers. The aisles typically were carpeted. The teamsters who set up the shows used a doublesided carpet tape to lay the carpet and would toss the partially used rolls when they finished. It's tenacious but loosens with a hairdryer and a putty knife.

I have used carpet tape as well....the thin stuff. Holds great, but make sure your surfaces are clean and dust free. I noticed that if there were any dust at all, the vibration of the router would allow the template to move. If I were careful and cleaned the surfaces before applying the tape, no problems.

It was a while back but we pick-up a few large rolls of double sided that has a thin foam layer -- its uses here for holding down bridge blanks to the CNC table very tenacious! Its was sold as servo mounting tape at one of the RC hobby suppliers.

When I worked at a factory where we used a lot of this tape we called it "supervisor tape", two-faced!
