For someone building 4-6 instruments a year, is this a reasonable idea? I understand it is slow, but I am not in a big hurry.

It wont work because you can not thickness backs or tops unless you are only building parlors! For a dread, an unjoined back or top is minimally 8.25 inches wide.

Yea, not really wide enough unless you are doing 4 piece tops, and I doubt it would be durable enough to stand up to any hardwoods at all.

For the same money I would get a good plane that is suitable for thicknessing the plates. Also it will take up less room.

Not to mention it generates a lot less dust, is much more satisfying to use (once you get the hang of it) and it's a LOT quieter :p

'Bout what I thought.
I do use a plane now, and I do enjoy it.

With two hundred dollars and four or five hours of your time you can build a drum sander that will really do the job --- this tool with and its 1/3 hp motor will take about 40 minutes to take off 1/16" of hard wood from a 5"x20" board --- no joke!!

I see it as an expensive binding making machine.
