Binding laminate router bit

I've read that a sprial down cutting bit is a good choice to use for cutting the binding edge.
Does anyone use this type of router bit? How well does it work?
Is there another bit that you recommend.

Thank you,
Mark L.

A spiral down cut is good. What kind of router base are you going to use to register off the side?

I was told that the down cut spiral is used because it doesn't cause fuzz on the top edge of the lip. That is what I used and it worked very well.

I purchased a Rigid Laminate Router and made a base jig from these plans. http://www.mimf.com/archives/binding_jig2.htm
I completed it this past weekend and just need to test it out on some scrap wood before I get my first guitar kit.

Mark,

A down cut bit is always better than an up cut bit. However, I use a straight bit with the KMG router binding attachment. On four guitars it has worked great. I anticipate this trend to continue. If I had a down cut bit, I might use that, but I only have small ones for inlay.
Good luck with your binding ledges, they are not hard if you take your time.

As a machinist I will say the a sharp bit is best . If you have a cleared slot but one is not really better than another. I cannot see where a bit that is 3 times the price is better . Sharp bits are best . When a down cut gets dull you will push end fibers down into the work. Things look good till you sand and they separate . You are now left with an oversized cut.
No matter what you use . be sharp.

We always use a down spiral bit for inlay work rosettes etc. Our binding machine is equipped with a down spiral as well. However, as John mentions "sharp" is the operative word -- new off the shelf HSS , straight/bottom cutting bits will do a very nice job.
