sg/les paul kit

I am looking to "recreate" my fathers 1961 Gibson Les Paul (with the SG body style) from a kit. Does anyone know if Gibson filled the grain prior to staining?? and what type of finish is it? satin?? gloss?? I'm thinking the first.. any help would be appreciated!!

yes they were filled and I am not sure of the finish

Thanks for the quick response. another dumb question, as this will be my first kit build... did they use a clear filler or use a darker color to pop out the grain?
