Has anyone tried a kit with a three piece back, like a D35? If so, was it hard to put together the back portion or no? I have built one kit before, so I don't have a ton of experience. Any suggestions or thoughts?

That isn't that hard. In most cases we glue up the backs at Blues Creek and thickness them properly for you.
Take your time and it will all work out
