This is mostly an economical question; Alaska Specialty Woods sells a box of split bracewood for $160, or a box of sawn bracewood for $80. Is it more economical money / waste-wise to just get the $80.00 box and then split the sawn bracewood yourself?

Anyone have any experience in trying this, what were your results?

you can get split stock here or larger rip stock that you can split. You want to use the wood for most strength. Split stock gets you more "with the grain" where rip stock will have more run out. You will have a better yield with the split stock.

Your cost per brace may be similar between the two options due to waste on the sawn stock.
