Doing the rims before the plates.

Post by nkwak »

The bracing didn't glue up well to my WRC top so off they came. I was advised to concentrate on getting the rims ready instead and then move on to bracing/voicing. The going has been slow (and less than meticulous) but I've got the blocks and kerfing on. All that's left is to add some side slats and then radius the rims.

The neck block going in:

Moving on to the kerfing, I did the top first then a week later planed the back rim down about 1/8" to the waist and kerfed the back rim. I used 3 bags of clothes pins (at a buck a bag) to do each rim just because I saw that this was how they did it over in Nazareth:

Moving on to the rim I planed away some excess between the neck joint and the first curve of the upper bout before applying the kerfing.

Looking back I probably should have planed away more toward the waist and made sure everything was level but I'm hoping there's just enough (but not too much) wiggle room with the radius dish. Still after about only an hour of glue I pulled the pins and felt satisfied with the results:

Next up is putting in side slats similar to the ones Jonathan Kinkead uses before sanding the rims with a radius dish. The top is to have a 28' radius but I hear that the upper bout should be nearly flat, following the 1.5° angle that I've attempted to sand into the plywood neck block extension. The plans for this guitar (the OLF medium jumbo) call for a 15' radius on the back but I'm probably going to stick with a 20' radius.

I like that sculpted carpet back you chose, adds character to the guitar, wonder how it will sound. Looking good, keep the pics coming!

LOL - I kinda like the carpet thing. It's "rustic!"

Seriously though, here's the actual back I'll be using. I think it'll look better, don't you?

I do think it will look much better but for the life of me I can't identify the species of wood that is, what are we looking at? Did you do the glue-up yourself?

It's African mahogany back & sides. Not sure of the exact species though; a friend has graciously provided me with the materials. IIRC the center strip is curly mahogany. I'm using EIR for the rosette ring and body binding.

Yes, I did the glue-up and thickness sanding myself, with some help at first.

Thanks! We'll have to wait and see how the back taper fared though. I had the sides pre-tapered but there was a little extra at the neck joint which I planed away there but left it at the waist without even measuring to see if the two sides were even. Oh well, it's my first attempt after all. The top rim should be good to go though.

Looking good Neil. I think the choice of EIR for the binding against the mahogany is going to look awesome.
Don't be afraid to take the sides down a little bit more to get them even, you will be glad you did when it comes time to glue up the back, and if it makes the body a little bit shallower that is not a big deal. Just measure, mark and go slow and don't take anymore off then you have too.

Nice work! Good choice sing wood instead of carpet for the back. I think carpet would really dampen the response!
