'nother L-OO
Re: 'nother L-OO
Jim -- That's is absolutely true - these days however its the Gibson L00 reissue Nick Lucas kit that is on the "need to build list" most often -- it is the 14th fret deep body. We've sold some of the L0 size as well -- now that has some interesting bracing! Its a wonder they did not collapse at the factory.

Brian,
I can't remember exactly what my dimmer limit is, but I did get one that is higher than the charcoal lighter, and I got it at Lowe's.
Have you checked there?

Re: 'nother L-OO
Thanks guys for the input on the difference of the two OO's. Ken, the visual aids are extra helpful. More 12th fret OO's Than 14th fret's, would that be because of the smaller body size or am I trying to compare apples to oranges (so to speak)? Darren, sorry to hijack your thread, but I'm so uneducated about guitars in general I like to tap into the wealth of information available here at KGF. Like the junkie trying to get that next hit, I can't get enough (information).

Re: 'nother L-OO
Interesting to se how Darren is using a flat panel as a shooting board. I guess the biggest benefit to using a tapered shooting board is that it uses a larger section of the blade on the plane so I'm guessing it would dull quicker if you always cut in the same spot. Is this a big deal (considering most of us won't build more than 2 guitars per year and most less)?
I also noticed Darren using the tape method for the top. I've not considered this before as I had always thought of using the tape method with CA glue (for some unknown reason). Does the tape method work ok with Titebond, fish glue, or HHG?

Darryl, I've considered sloping the board but ya know, for 20 minutes of quick work twice a year I've thought the same as you -not a big deal. especially shooting the top, the material is so soft the blade isn't working much. If I was doing it more often there would be a dedicated shooting board that was tapered/slanted.
Tape method works fine with any glue, as far as I know. I've seen it done with titebond/fish/hhg, I use it with lmi's white glue. The biggest advantage I see with it is that I can glue it up and literally pick up the plate and move it off my workspace and continue with gluing the back plate or fretting or whatever is next.

the 'mostly' completed rim:
I have not had this issue on the mahogany linings, now I know...
I say 'mostly' because as you see in the next close-up, the binder clips I use to glue on my kerfings are a little rough on the basswood, and I have some sanding to do to remove some of those marks.I have not had this issue on the mahogany linings, now I know...

Also got the finger board bound, fretted and cleaned up. Thanks to KenC, JohnH and JohnP for helping me get those fret ends to sit down tight.

Nice job binding the fretboard. The white purfling line looks classy.
