Alternative wood names

I was given a box of smallish blocks and chunks of hardwoods that belonged to a man who used to do a little carving before his passing a few years ago. They are large enough that I could get bridges and bridge plates and headplates out of them but not more than that. Some appear to be rosewood. A couple of pieces are marked in pencil "amaranth" and I found a link online that says that name is sometimes used for purpleheart. A few other pieces are similarly marked "carmine" but I can't find anything anywhere that links it to anything else. It is quite dark reddish-brown with open grain, fairly similar to Narra that I used in a just-completed ukulele, but darker. Has anyone heard this name used colloquially for any tropical hardwood? Thanks - Bruce W.
