Oak picture frames from the lutherie bench

About a week before Christmas I realized I needed to up my gift game and wanted to see if I could make some nice picture frames with my bench setup for lutherie. John Hall's Fleishman Binding Machine made cutting the slot for the art and glass was easy as could be. Here's an easy frame to make if you are setup for guitars for sure!

joinery: pinned half-lap joint. Tightbond 1, w/ 1/4" oak dowels.
insert: I had fun routing the back with John Hall's binding machine.

I wanted to show show how quickly they can be made on your guitar benches.

steps:
1) rip rails and stiles to width and thickness or use a planer to thickness.
2) Use dado blade with sled to setup cuts. (sorry,dado blades are not generally in lutherie but the table saw is.)
3) To mass produce frames: Cut all frames at each saw setup using a stop block, then repeat that cut on all frames before moving the block.
4) use binding machine with binding slot bit to cut slot in back. ( or router table, or hand router. ) I used my smallest bearing and the glass just fit in. See plans.
5) sand,dye or stain, finish[/list]
6) pre-cut mats and glass makes it easy. Just test to ensure it fits after cutting with the router.

One more closeup. Nice frames are expensive. This is a good, cheap frame. The pre-cut mats are under $10, and I got the glass cut at the local hardware for $1.99 each.

I used 3/4" quarter-sawn oak and planed down the thinner pieces. This would look good in a lot of of other species I bet.

Wonderful work. I like the tasteful simplicity of those. It is nice to work on something that can be completed fairly quickly and is a tad less critical than a guitar!

Here's a frame for a stained glass picture made from a straight (rare!) Manzanita branch harvested from my property. Quartered it and routed a groove for the glass frame. Mitered corners are kinda crude but match the wood.
