It would be nice if Sylvan could comment on the meaning of the song (if it's not a secret). Here are 2 that some posted thought:
"The 'Little Black Egg' is the Universe full of stars. The 'Tree' is the TREE OF LIFE. 'Mary & Lee' (Levi) are Catholicism & Judaism. "I won't let them stretch their necks" - means keeping the secrets of FREEMASONRY hidden from 'Mary & Lee'. "Oh, father, what can I do?" A plea to God. "The Little Black Egg's gonna tell on you" - refers to the universe revealing your sins to the Creator after you die."
"WOW! I thought everyone knew what the lyrics meant! 1966, drugs, black beauties, yellow jackets, little "black eggs" with white specks, what was that! It's going to "tell on you"! OMG you got caught leaving it in a tree in the park. Back in 1966, you got caught with a pot seed it was 20 years! Kids got it so easy today! Anyway I played in the first rock band (garage) band in Chesapeake, VA in 1966 to play this song. It has for some reason been an time favorite of mine!"

I am gratified that some people still remember that record. I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but the song had, essentially, meaningless lyrics. The lyrics were written it the time it took to take a shower. We were opening an Easter show with The Beach Boys and I asked the bass player and singer to write the lyrics to the catchy guitar lick and make it about Easter while I take a shower. I suppose that is where "the egg" reference came in. We thought it was a throwaway-little did we know!

Oh no real deep meaning ????
It is funny how things can get turned around. Thanks for the insight.

I love it. The song, the meaningless lyrics, the endless pursuit to interpret it. Just Great!sylvan wrote:I am gratified that some people still remember that record. Growing up, our baby boom suburb had many garage bands. The song was often covered. It was fun hearing it again.

1966. I was 11 and just beginning to learn to play the guitar. I loved the Beatles, but was drawn to the folk music scene, Dylan, PP & M, Baez, gosh, even liked playing and singing the Kingston Trio stuff.
I don't remember this song!!! Okay Sylvan, so which one are you in the band? This is very cool!
