Repair question

I'm trying to repair a friend's guitar. I have the top off and removed the kerfing, no problem. But there is a piece of the side that is missing, about 1" long and 1/2" deep, right where the top and side meet. The wood appears to be eir.
It is deeper than the binding will be, unless I go to 1/2" binding which would be weird. To make things worse, the missing piece is right on the waist curve.
Any ideas?

Is this a guitar with value (aside from sentimental)? You could do a two-layer binding, bottom part be EIR, top be whatever was there. you could do a multilayer decorative binding (someone else here did one that looked quite good), or you could try to splice a peice in. It will be a visible repair, however. Tough one. Got pics?

That two layer binding is probably the easier route. I've not attempted a splice like this before. It is a pretty nice guitar that was dropped and hit the floor at a bad spot. I'll see if I can get a pic.

I just would not know how to go about that, nor if I have the skill set. How would one do it?
