Buying a house.... and building a work shop!?!?

Haven't been on the forum lately cause I've been busy with work and fixing a couple friends' guitars.... but my wife and I are buying a house, and if all goes well we'll have it in May. Wife says I can have the whole basement.... previous owner had 2 shops in the basement (one for rough work and one for finishing the model boats and planes he built) so I'm very excited about setting up my own shop for guitar building.... yes I haven't even finished my first kit and I got the building bug! ha ha
The 2 existing rooms in the basement are 8ft x 14ft, and the other is 12.5ft x 17ft. That should give me plenty of room for guitar building, don't ya think? Ideas/suggestions for setting up a shop anyone?!

Nice! Congrats on the house, and have fun with the shops! I always look at that as a chance to keep using my tools...making new benches, shelves, cabinets, machines! Since I don't use tools every day for my job, it keeps my skills sharp and helps me learn new ones! Definitely get us some pics when its ready!

I don't hide my saw dust. I keep my collection spread around for everyone to see.

"Wife says I can have the whole basement."
I would get that in writing if I were you :)

I would first make an investment in a good saw dust collection system. Homes with recalculating heating \cooling systems (all forced air systems) will distribute fine saw dust around the entire house. It is better for your health in any event ... and your marriage :)

I agree on the dust system and a good humidity control. I used a Lasko recirculating humidifer in winter and 16 pint de humidifier in summer.
Good luck and send pics we all like to see what others do

Haven't done much guitar stuf lately. Just about finished renovating the upstairs of the house to our liking, so soon I'll be working on a shop!
The 12.5' x 17' room I've decided to use as a music room. That'll give lots of room for a drummer, some amps, lots of room for a couple guys to play! The 8' x 14' room will become my shop.... or should I say ONE of my shops.... see, there is another room that is 9 ft x 13ft that right now is a storage room but Ì am going to use that as a second shop. I can use that room for power tools and any of the dirty jobs like heavy sanding and then the other 8 x 14 room can be the room I do all of my gluing, assembly, and finishing. In the 8 x 14 room there are 2 windows so I am also thinking I could set up a small simple spray booth in the corner and vent outside. I have so many ideas going through my head. Cannot wait to get back to working on guitars. I have also picked up some wood in preparation for some more projects!

Phil,
All I can say is "you lucky dog". Not many of us have that kind of room for our building. Use one room as a "clean room"...
