Afternoon listening

Post by deadedith »

Rainy day, did a little work this a.m., a few chores, then decided to treat myself to some listening.
Back porch, Sofi on my lap napping instead of staring at me, a good little cigar and a strong cuppa joe, feet up, the smell of pot roast cooking,a great book, an ipod. Oh man.
Rock music today. At its best it is joyful, wildly enthusiastic, melodic, loud, medium tempo but with fire in the belly.

For an easy intro, Gary Hoey playing "Motown Fever". Funky, clean, tasty.
Ramp it up with Eric Johnson "Cliffs of Dover." Eargasm. Totally.
A little Satriani - he can feel the joy in "Summer Song" and bring it down to an even more enjoyable "Starry Night." Then "Cool No. 9" and "Secret Prayer."

For dessert, the best of them all "Curacion(sunlight on water) - Santana. The best music to fit a title that I've ever heard. Here in So. Oregon we have many high mountain lakes, ringed with pines, that we can be to in a few minutes. This tune reminds me of pleasant days at Lake of the Woods, families bbq'ing, kids playing among the trees, always a soft breeze than in fact does cause the sunlight to glimmer on the lake, where a few fisherman are trolling and it seems there are always big fluffy lazy clouds, and a few girls in bikinis splashing around. So.....human, in its best sense.

And for a sweet sweet song to finish up: The Whites, with Jerry Douglas on dobro and Ricky Skaggs on mandolin, backing up the girl singers on "Bring me back that old familiar feeling" a great bluegrass love song, with an outro that has Skaggs and Douglas echoing each other's instruments on a delightful bunch of riffs.

I'm a lucky dude.
Gotta clean up a bit for dinner..

You sure have a way with words. Makes me wish I was there. Also, my 3 year old had an epic tantrum (to much sugar at lunch) so that would also contribute to my desire to not be here, but I digress.

Though not your thing, Dave, I brewed a batch of beer today. Put another layer of tru-oil on the uke, and was lucky enough to have Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and Hayes Carll stop by while I did it!
Glad we could make use of a rainy day in our own way!

I allow myself a beer every now and then - prefer the dark stuff, porter and stout.
And I am happy for people who can have a few drinks and enjoy them!
Sounds like a good afternoon for you too :-)

You do have an almost lyrical sense of expression....something you need to explore. And your taste in music is superb. I was just watching a live version of cliffs of dover on youtube a few nights ago....the one where he plays some very soft, slow chordal noodling for about 5-6 minutes before breaking into the meat of the song. Beautiful stuff, so unappreciated. Satriani is fantastic, and Santana is by far one of the best players I have ever heard. He may not be as flashy as others, but he can play with any style of music period. The phrasing he uses when he plays is not technical, but almost conversational. Starts with a phrase that ends high, or seemingly unfinished, then the next phrase completes...like asking a question, then answering it. Amazing. Today, though, when I was in one room for more than 20 minutes, I listened to Norah Jones exclusively. That voice is just so damned seductive.....

Today, the weather sucked in Chicago. Froze my kids arses off at a soccer game, but the kids played great. Came home, did a little work around the house. Looked at some boat plans, some more boat porn, then worked on Black Beauty. Strung her up, and she sounds awesome! I had a neck geometry issue (seems to be my weakness) and the high e seemed to just fall off the neck. Spent an hour getting it and the neck angle right, so I decided to string her up and try her. Great sound right of the bat, but still needs some fret dressing, corrected nut and saddle, then an overall polish. I promise, at that point I'll take some pictures and do some recording. My sister is so excited.....

You got me wishing for a cigar too! Just checked my humidor....been 9 months since I had one and they're doin fine.

MJM, what'ya brew? It's been 10 years since I have brewed anything, gotta start that hobby again. My favorite was an oatmeal stout I would convert to a cream stout. I'd roast the grains (I walways do no matter what, like the color and the flavor it imparts over fresh-dried), and I would ad a pound of lactose and 3 tablespoons of vanilla....sOOOOO creamy when its done, and the chocolate bean is so good roasted! Great beer, and I miss it. Good luck on the brew, and thanks for such a nice post Dave.

So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.

+1 on Norah Jones! And that oatmeal stout sounds yummy...the wife and I have been trying, on a fairly regular basis, to have kids for 40 years now. It just may not happen, so we go to nephews/nieces soccer games and yell like fools. It's fun.

Sounds like some good Saturdays were had all around. Good to hear.

I'm partial to bitter beers like IPA's or anything with a great hop character. But I've been brewing for about 17 years and made most of the common styles. In the last year or so I've begun to experiment with using ginger in the recipes, with some interesting results.

If I were you, I would keep plugging away! I mean, there is nothing more healthy than an optimistic attitude, coupled with a little...coupling if you will? Sounds like a recipe for a nice marriage.
