I think you are right about not trimming the sides. However, he DOES have enough spruce and mahogany to make a back and top big enough for this monstrosity so I am still wondering if it was intentional.

Could it perhaps be a mariachi thing? We have a few mariachi bands around here and they always sport at least one huuuuge guitar.
