What are the "lines" on the sides of this set? Compression wood?

I would be afraid of the sides as that can be compression or a side pin knot.
they can let go and cause a crack no matter how careful .

$800. From old growth board milled in the late '60s or early '70s so not stump wood.

Backs 8 5/8"x 21 1/2"x 3/16"thick. Sides 5"x 33"x 3/16" so should be big enough for a dreadnaught I would think.

This is a closeup of the line across the back which I assume is the same sort of "flaw". Not sure if it helps or not.

the flaw on the back appears to be a saw mark
the sides are a different story

Yep, looks like the edges of knots on the sides. I would definitely pass.

Thanks for the feedback John & Brian! The claim is there are no knots, bug holes etc.......so I assume this is compression grain.

I don't think it's actually a knot, rather the wood right beside where a not was. It's the wiggle around the knot from the way it looks in the pictures. Their will be some rapid and extreme changes in run-out at those spots.
