Somogyi escapes to Texas

Post by naccoachbob »

The LINT (Luthiers Interactive of North Texas) is sponsoring Ervin Somogyi on Feb 26 in a small town southwest of Ft Worth.
The LINT Link is: http://www.lint.org/index2.html
I'm going to go. It's rare to get to some event for me out here in the Piney Woods, so I'm making a weekend of it.

Tips, tricks, other odd stuff. Answering questions, etc. It really would have been interesting, but I'm not going to be going. (Sad face)
As you know, Tony, one of my former soccer players passed away. We took the money that was dedicated to that trip and gave it to the family.
So Ervin will have to suffer without me this year. I'll somehow make it up to him though.

I attended a session at the last Healdsburg Guitar Festival with him. I was plenty worth the $$ I spent for it. He is an excentric personality that really holds your interest.

I attended yesterday. The talk was a lot of what is in his video but the opportunity to ask questions and hear him explain things was truly worth the money. Mr. Somogyi is an incredible guy. He expresses his views on guitar building freely giving all the things he has learned but refrains from claiming that he has all the answers or that someone else is doing it wrong. He seems to know his position in the luthier community but remains humble.
I have read both of his books and am working on going through them again. If you are a new builder and are seriously interested in understanding what you are doing they are worth every penny of the (very high) price.

Mr. Somogyi has been tutoring me and his wealth of knowledge and willingness to share it is awesome. I'm hoping this tutoring situation will lead to a full apprenticeship eventually :D

I contacted him a few years ago about a 1 week intensive he was teaching - theory mainly - for a few students, but at FIVE THOUSAND dollars for a week, sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag, decided hell no. I did find his books interesting however, I got them for Xmas, a wealth of information.
