Found a true rarity today, at least a picture of one for sale. Never seen one of these, even in pictures! It is a Stanley 164 low angle smoother. Stanley took the 62, which is jack plane length, and shortened it to smoothing plane length, but then found that the depth adjusting mechanism wouldn't fit and came up with a hybrid mechanism using the same parts. This this early 30's version is unused. The sales price is $3,875.00.

The only time I have ever said "much cheaper to buy the Lie-Nielson version"

I just bought the Veritas small low angle smooth plane, and I love it. It's the perfect length for smoothing and leveling the fretboard side of the neck I'm making, as well as the peghead. A low angle jack would have been too much plane for me. I did it in about 5 passes when I got the plane.

Yes, the low angle smooth plane is a zebra, that is for sure. I found 3 manufacturer's, one was well over $1000.
