My new baby! Pass the cigars around.
I finally got around to mounting my new (to me) Ryobi 16/32 drum sander on my bench. I am a proud new papa.
There was a problem with the on/off switch so I took it out, took it apart and scraped clean the contact points inside, put it back together and it works now. I haven't used it yet, but everything runs.
For $150 plus $50 worth (at 1997 prices) of sandpaper for the drum, I feel really good about getting it. I never thought I'd see one in my shop. This location was the only bench top area I had where I could mount it and have access to the front, back and side all at once. It should work great for guitar work.
The cigars will be going out to you tomorrow.

Nice!
I am curious, is it customary to hand out cigars when you adopt an adult?
You will be making piles of sawdust in no time!

Nice,
Having a drum sander is great. I have been using mine nearly every day I am in the shop. What are you using for dust extraction? I have found it really important not just to control the dust but to get it out of the sander to have it operate well. My high-end shop-vac is barely cutting it.

I am planning on hooking my shop vac up to it. We will see how well it works, I use it for extraction on my other sanders and my bandsaw.
Tony, have you used your sander yet?

Congrats, Kevin! I am jealous. Mine works, but nothing beats a pro tool!

Tell us again where you got it from, was it Craig's List? I really, really need one.

Yes I found it on Craigs list, locally. I was quite surprised as I only look there about once a month, so I was lucky.
If any of you find one of these units either as a Ryobi, Steel City, or Accura, Accura has all the parts. This sander is still being made by a Taiwanese company, and they sell it direct too.
I will use it when I start my next build this summer and I'll report how it goes.

Did this sander do the job? What's the top width it will accept? I need a good drum sander but don't have the budget for a commercial one yet!
