Can anyone identify this wood?

Post by Diane Kauffmds »

I bought several sets of wood, none of which were identified. Can anyone identify this wood? Is it Koa?

Thanks.

I took photos with and without naphtha.

Diane

I think Koa is a good guess because of the look of the grain. The color variation could be walnut.

Can't tell from a photo, but a lot of light colored koa does have that look. It's always a dilemma when you have wood that you can't identify. For some reason, even if it looks great, its almost impossible to use it. Good luck!-Bob

Bruce Hoadley's book "Understanding Wood" is a great reference. He shows you how to look at a piece of wood from three angles - end grain, face grain, and edge grain - with a loupe and narrow down what it is. If you had unlimited time you could do that.

I appreciate everyone who responded. The wood that I bought was supposed to include a set of bookmatched koa top, back, and sides. I finally located the other matching set.

This is definitely the koa.
