Re: drastic restoration
This is the beginning
The tuners were changed at some point and the holes elongated to fit the different spacing. I really like the wood screw addition to hole the post in place. On top of that , the very top there is a metal rod installed . This is horrible amateur work at its finest.
The guitar needs a neck reset , and new pickguard. A few loose braces and some minor work. The plan will be remove the crap out of the headstock and repair that. I will post pics as I proceed.
Hope you guys enjoy this one.

Good Lord. Don't you just love amateur repairs? I'll be really interested in how you deal with this.

Re: drastic restoration
today I got the neck off and started the headstock repair. I will have to order a plug cutter. The tuners are in the trash and I have a new set ordered. The spacing was all wrong for a slot head. The headstock shows signs of a crack.
My plan at this point is to get the holes plugged then I will machine the headstock and cap the plugs to make a laminated repair.
I got a few pics today but will post them together once I can get the whole repair roughed out. That way you can understand the sequence and the plan I have to make the headstock structure integral .

Re: drastic restoration
got back at this
as you can see another nightmare of armature repair.
after getting all the tuner and whatever out of the slot head I could then see what damage was done.
Aside from the cracks and over sized holes , they also over slotted the head stock. So I started by making plugs and ordering a new set of tuners.
The I used a stain to match as well as I could. In the end I had to use 2 bushings for the 11th and 12th string so the tuner post has something to ride in. That explained why the had scews and metal pieces here and there.

Re: drastic restoration
Here is more photos. when I tried the new tuners I found the issue of the slots being widened and I them replaced the plugs and went with 1/2 in for better structural stability. I had to use an end mill to avoid tearing up the thin walls and then glued in the plugs
