Body Holding Vise Devices?

Post by Kbore »

I need to build a vice to hold the neck and the loose body off the bench. I don't have a proper work bench, just birch plywood on top of a base. Any one have a homegrown holding solution I can clamp to the plywood bench top? Can't mount StewMac ultimate vice either. Ideas? This is the best I've found so far:

Not sure if you have a spot to mount this type of holder or not? I've put of mounts in a couple of spots in my workroom & one outside. Can be bought on the cheap. A solid clamp & use it when I need to. I backed my wood sides w/ cork..

This isn't home grown, but I think it'll fit your situation. It's made by Black and Decker and you can find them on EBay. I think I paid about $45, including shipping. I've clamped everything from dreadnoughts to parlor guitars in this. I use it when I have to pull a neck. I have it clamped to the makeshift frame that you see. It tilts to 45°. It can also be closed asymmetrically, for putting a guitar sideways.

This is a great solution for someone with no room. I was building in my dining room and front porch in the beginning.

It's a black and decker workmate 79-020. They are still listed on eBay. I just checked.

Thanks DK. That is perfect. I lost the eBay bid on a reasonable priced one ( my max bid was 40.99). Other are north of $60 with the shipping.

It's going to be sad, but I'm going to cut my Black and decker'legs off and, using the existing metal folders, and build up your tilting top on a wooden bench top base. Can't be as challenging as this dreadnaught has been!

I don't have the face on my plywood top to attach the excellent device rNb posted (yet anyway). Going to finish a bench top now that I've met my soul mate (guitar building).

There was a "make an offer" listing too. They show up frequently. I have 3 work benches in the shop now, and I need more. Watch out. Guitar building can take on a life of its own.
