Problem Pore Filling EIR

Post by Anthony66 »

Hello,
This is my first post to this forum, so I hope I'm doing it correctly. I'm in the process of pore filling some EIR with Z-Poxy and I've noticed some darkening of the wood on the upper bout. I've used Z-Poxy on several other builds and I've never had this issue. The wood was very uniform prior to applying the epoxy and only showed up after applying it. I've sanded that area back to bare wood and it seems as the wood in that section is lighter and more porous when compared to before, but when I apply the Z-Poxy it darkens up again. Does anyone have any ideas what could have caused this and whether or not I can rectify the situation? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you,
Tony

I am not sure what happened but zpoxy can pickup a lot of dark oil from rosewood and smear it. In any case zpoxy has an amber tint and it will darken rosewood.

To correct what you have you need to sand it all back evenly to wood and then apply an even coat on everything.

Thank you for your response. The odd thing is that I did sand everything back down to bare wood and noticed that the wood in that particular area seemed to have become more porous than the rest of the wood. I sanded everything with 400 and made sure to clean the wood before reapplying the Z-Poxy, but it darkened again in the exact same area. Is it possible that the epoxy permanently damaged that part of the wood?

I've never used Z-poxy, but maybe this will help. I had some problems porefilling BRW with Aquacoat, actually resulting in a similar problem. I sanded it back and I used a quick, light, wash coat of about 1/2# cut of shellac, then I porefilled again. This took care of the problem.

Assuming you can use zpoxy over shellac, this may help.

I've never done a zpoxy pore fill before, but I have read that some people sand back to wood after filling, just leaving the filled pores. Maybe that would solve your problem?
