Re: Martin D28 to D45 conversion

Re: Martin D28 to D45 conversion
here are a few pics
I have a full list on my Facebook page
In this series I had to get creative to get the back cracks to close. The braces were broken so removing them was a no brainer. I did replace them with Red Spruce.
I used Deglue Goo to help soften the old repairs then steam I posted those vids
after the repairs the new braces were fit and the kefing repaired and replaced.
I then also could close the box. The binding is the next thing I must do

Here are pics of the kerfing and top being glues
I routed out the bottom of the old pockets then set in pieces and sanded to shape.
I use mostly hide glue for this repair

Re: Martin D28 to D45 conversion
Found the pictures on your facebook page. Does explain the top, torrefied red spruce.... makes perfect sense, take a early sixties BRW body and replace the broken sitka top w/ an adi top.
This seems like a good time to ask a question about the style 45 purfling. Does not cutting out a channel in the spruce, along/around the sides of the fretboard, lend itself to increasing chance of cracking in that area? i assume that the glue and abalone replace that structural strength? otherwise it would not be a desired upgrade.
thanks john for sharing these pics and video... t

Re: Martin D28 to D45 conversion
no The area is well supported
I don't use just a little piece of b/w/b and pearl you will see how it gets done in a day or do. I make a glue up of the material and inlay that so there will be a wider piece and that is all glued into the channel. It may even make the area stronger in that they share the stress and the glue joint will be about .325 wide.
