Kevin

Do they still sell infrared heat lamps? They put out a ton of heat in the direction of the bulb

Randall I really enjoyed the bending process on the pipe just as you described and I even miss it some. The feel and smells make you feel really involved in the process. I might have to get that pipe out and experience that again.

I make windsor chairs and boats, and for both of those projects you use a steam box for bending wood - let the wood cook for a while to make it flexible. It is one of the more rewarding jobs in both of those crafts. When I got a hot pipe going, I realized I was home again. Pretty cool time, once you get past making your curves fair and getting a continuous motion going evenly. The hardest part is understanding if the piece will match the mold without taking it off the pipe frequently.

I was doing some bending today and I noticed the wood started moving very easily.

Then I saw the split that was forming in the wood. :-(

It's not very deep and the sides were inexpensive sides I got on eBay, so I'm going to see what I can learn trying to remedy the situation.
